Four Column Notes is an incredible graphic organizer that allows students to go deeper into the text and look for the significance of what they are reading in relationship to the elements of a novel or short story. Students go beyond just reading the words and really interpret the meaning and context of the text.
Page Number(s) are always important to document (they are imperative to the Concrete Details of the row...)! Make sure students do that first!!!
Topic/Main Idea is the column where a story element is identified.
Concrete Details(CD's) are quotes or words from the text that relate to the Topic/Main Idea.
Commentaries from Your Head (CM's) are the words that show the student's voice or what their ideas are that connect the CD to the Topic/Main Idea.
